Consumers have made the Wii such a hot item that you can hardly find the game anywhere. For days on end consumer searches for the famed game console are coming up empty. Third-party Game publishers are stunned that the games for the console aren’t selling as well as expected, considering the Wii’s success with popularity and some say that nintendos success with even the games makes it seem almost as though they were Exclusive to Nintendo, since almost no one is buying the games for the Wii from any other retailers except Nintendo themselves, with the exception of Guitar Hero III. Leaving a strong indication that big game name makers most likely will not profit from the Wii’s buying frenzy as a result. The Wii sold more than 3.1 million units as of January, but the bestseller game for the platform has been Nintendo’s own title Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess.”Nintendo has always dominated with games on
their platform,” says Brian O’Rourke, an analyst with the industry
research firm In-Stat. “If you go back to all Nintendo platforms,
two-thirds of software sales have been Nintendo-developed games. Many third party publishers are really scrambling to profit from the Wii’s success. Billy Pidgeon, a games analyst at IDC says, “There’s a perception that Nintendo’s systems are less friendly for third parties than competitive platforms”. The perception among game creators is that Nintendo favors its internal development team over independent publishers. Pidgeon calls that “nintendos third party problem”.
As a Result, Electronic Alerts, a third-party publisher for nintendo
didn’t offer the best support for older Nintendo platforms, such as the GameCube, and has preferred to create games for Sony’s platform. Sony leads the market with the largest installed base of consoles. With the Wii, nintendos attitude towards third-party publishers has turned around and they are working with developers better, says Pidgeon. While the tools from Sony are very expensive, Nintendo are giving their developers tools away free.
EA still vying for piece of Wii pie:
Headgate Studios of Salt Lake City, Utah, have been exclusively
developing titles for the Wii platform and was aquired in December by EA. Electronic Arts CEO Larry Probst said that By the end of this fiscal year, EA will have six titles in the market — which, other than Ubisoft — would make them the most prolific publisher on the Wii platform through March. Pidgeon says The lower cost of game development for the Wii has also given smaller publishers an opportunity to make games for the platform and Companies that do differentiate between the platforms will have the edge because they can write for the platform.
THQ Inc. is a leading worldwide developer and publisher of interactive entertainment software and could very well be the beneficiary of the Wii’s success. One of THQ INC.’S best selling games Cars of sold a reported 7 million Units, 3 million of which were for the Wii and Xbox360. They also shipped 1 million units each of its Nickelodeon titles Avatar and SpongeBob SquarePants also for the Wii game console.
The company plans on having 11 Wii titles scheduled for release in 2008. The Wii and the DS are favorites for THQI over the Ps3 platform.
