Because of the overwhelming Demands for the new Wii game console, many shoppers will have to wait until after the Christmas holidays to receive their orders, due to shortages. Nintendo Co. are issuing rain checks for the popular video game item to be available in January of 2008. These rain checks are said to be in the “tens of thousands” range. U.S. retailers are expected to have the Wii game console this weekend. Among the stores that are expected to have the game are Best Buy Co Inc, Sears Holdings Corp and Wal-Mart Stores Inc. The unique motion-sensing controller and simpler games have help to put the Wii in large demand among others outside of the usually male based group of consumers.
The Wii’s rivals aren’t doing too bad, speaking of the Microsoft Corp’s Xbox 360 and the PlayStation 3 by Sony Corp, but preference among seekers is still the Wii, so much that most are often lining up before dawn at shops, or are willing to pay significantly marked-up prices for the game.
Since the Wii’s launch in the U.S. about a year ago 6 million units have been sold. Despite efforts to keep up with the demands, going from manufacturing 1 million units a month to 1.8 million presently, the ability to stock pile reserves was never able to be implemented. Fils-Aime, who called the shortages “unfortunate,” added that Nintendo will continue to manufacture the game console at the present rate for “quite a while”.
